Earth’s natural satellite and second luminary, the Moon represents the night light. Symbolically, in opposition to Sun which symbolizes the consciousness and ego, Moon represents the soul and the unconscious, instinctive, emotional part of our nature.

As the Sun represents the condition of existence of life, the Moon represents the form in which life manifests and the rhythm according to which it unfolds. Opposite the Sun, as the male principle and symbol of the father, the Moon represents the female principle and symbolizes the mother, so they relate to each other like a seed and an egg cell, day and night, conscious and unconscious, awake and sleep.

The Moon does not emit its own light, but reflects the Suns, so while the Sun describes everything we consciously experience during the day, the Moon describes the unconscious processing of what is experienced through reflection and dreams. As the Sun represents the heart, the tireless pump of life, the Moon represents the veins and arteries through which vital energy in the form of blood is transmitted, that is, circulated through the entire organism, so the basic function of the Moon is the distribution of life.

So, as the Sun represents the creation of life, the Moon symbolizes its reproduction and distribution. Also, as the Sun represents differentiated, unique individuality and important, significant, famous individuals, people who are visible, powerful, celebrated, the Moon on the other hand represents crowds, masses, large groups, the public, audience, the fans.

So, the Moon represents the emotional life of man, his world of dreams and imagination. As a female principle, the Moon represents the maternal instinct, the need for care and protection, the focus on the private, family side of life. It symbolizes tenderness, kindness, receptivity, sensitivity, soulfulness, gentleness, capacity for empathy, compassion and forgiveness, intuition.

So, in essence, the Moon represents a need for belonging, care, nurture and protection and need for emotional stimulation and connection.

The position in the sign, house and aspects shows the extent to which we are able to express the aforementioned qualities, how much and to whom we are sensitive, who and what arouses our emotions, how much empathy and compassion we have for others. Furthermore, it describes the atmosphere and relationships within the family, how we perceive our mother and what kind of relationship we have with her. Then, how adaptable we are to changes, as well as what image we have of ourselves based on our relationships with others.
