MERCURY

Symbol: ☿

Cycle: around 1 year

Domicile: Gemini, Virgo

Exaltation: Aquarius

Exile: Sagittarius, Pisces

Fall: Leo

According to the scheme of planetary dignities, the importance that Mercury has for man as a species is clearly reflected in the fact that it is the only planet that best expresses its essence exclusively in human signs, as shown by domiciles in Gemini and Virgo and exaltation in Aquarius. As such, Mercury represents human reason, that is, intellect. As the ruler of the dual signs, Gemini and Virgo, Mercury represents the dual nature of the human intellect, the ability to perceive on the one hand and the ability to think abstractly on the other. Therefore, due to the influence of Mercury, we are able to think, understand, speak and write. It represents critical thought, our ability to analyze, differentiate, compare, it symbolizes logic, dialectic, rhetoric. Due to the influence of this planet, man is a “reasonable animal”, “an animal that compares, that notices patterns”.

As the “messenger of gods”, Mercury represents the need for connection and therefore symbolize primarily communication and learning but also transport and exchange of goods and information.

As it is primarily the principle of connection, in the human body it represents functions and organs that are interconnected and which depend on each other. In addition to reason, it represents the sense of hearing, the ability to speak and write, as well as hands, arms and the respiratory organs. These functions and parts of the body are connected, so the way of breathing affects thinking, the connection between listening and understanding is obvious, as well as the connection between hearing and speech, as well as speech and hands, so while we speak, we gesture with our hands, which we normally use to write. If by any chance we damage the sense of hearing, we lose the ability to speak, as a result of which “sign language” was invented for the deaf and dumb, that is, hand language. It also represents the cerebellum which coordinates the movements of the arms and legs.

In contrast to Jupiter, Mercury feels best and expresses its nature in the most constructive way in air and earth signs, in which it tends to be clear, logical, rational, objective and pragmatic while in fire and water signs it is more difficult for it to express its nature because will, passions, desires, fears and emotions of those signs distort and disturb its basic function.

By its position in the sign, house and through the aspects it forms with other planets, it shows how and about what we think, how and about what we talk, what logic we use, what we are given to understand with ease, how we express ourselves and with whom we connect.
